Monster Hunter Tri, hereafter referred to as MHT, was the first game in the series that I've played. In short, this game is not for everyone. Nothing in this game comes easy; if you are looking to immediately tackle giant beasts from the get go
you probably won't like MHT. This game will require many hours of your time to get anywhere or accomplish much.
But.
If you bring down a deadly leviathan with observation, tracking, cunning, planning and a bit of luck, it feels so great. You start as a customizable hunter trying to aid a seaside village against a sea monster, but first you need to acquire
the tools, weapons, armor, resources and know-how to give you a fighting chance. You learn the ropes by tackling quests, some are rather simple; some quite difficult. On your way to becoming a pro hunter you'll gather resources in the field which can benefit you and help the village offer additional resources, such as a small farm, a base camp, and fishing vessels.
These resources are subtle, but useful. Almost any item you need can be made by foraging in the wilderness and combining the correct items. Taking horns, claws, fangs, entrails, scales etc, from slain monsters enable you to forge better weapons and armor, crucial to beating the harder foes, since you don't "level up." Each battle is won by good equipment and skill.
Speaking of equipment, there are a good variety of weapons that can be customized. Great Sword, Long Sword, Lance, Bowgun, Warhammer, and sword and shield combo are all offered, not to mention the switchaxe, which can turn into a sword. These all handle differently and being proficient in multiple weapons is advised.
Two players can play a gladiator type event against various beasts, but the
big hook for many people is the online co-op hunts. I have been too engrossed in single player to try online yet, but everything I hear is good. MHT supports Wiispeak and also keyboards so you can strategize with up to three other people while you try to take down the larger game as a group.
As for controls, there are three options: the nunchuck/wiiremote combo, the classic controller,(which I use) or the new classic controller pro, sold as a bundle if you want it. It's only ten dollars more, looks pretty sleek, and is getting many positive reviews.
I really like this game, it has a lot of depth and exploration to offer. That said, it takes a while to really accomplish much, and might scare off the unmotivated.Get more detail about Monster Hunter Tri.
